Sosabeol Dano Festival Returns to Pyeongtaek After Six Years

The Sosabeol Dano Festival, hosted and organized by Pyeongtaek City and the Pyeongtaek Cultural Center, will be held over two days on June 8th and 9th at the Pyeongtaek Agricultural Ecological Park. This year's festival is designed as a citizen participation event, aiming to recreate and celebrate the traditional Dano Festival, a significant Korean cultural heritage.

Dano, observed on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, is fondly referred to as "Suri Day" or "Suritnal." Historically, it signals the conclusion of rice planting and the onset of summer. This occasion is marked with cherished customs like crafting suritteok (a traditional rice cake), women enjoying swings, men engaging in wrestling matches, paying respects at ancestral graves, and washing hair in water infused with changpo (sweet flag) leaves.

The Sosabeol Dano Festival, organized by the Pyeongtaek Cultural Center, serves as a vibrant celebration of Korean cultural heritage and communal solidarity. This event showcases a diverse array of traditional activities and experiences, including performances of the nationally designated intangible cultural asset Pyeongtaek Nongak (farmers' music), alongside various hands-on activities and competitions.

The Sosabeol Danoje Festival offers a vibrant array of activities across themed zones. In the Experience Zone, visitors can enjoy traditional crafts like fan making and Korean wrestling, alongside folk games and fortune telling. The Performance Zone features captivating shows such as Pyeongtaek Nongak and local folk songs.

Pyeongtaek citizens can also  join the Citizen Competition Yard to compete in contests like Nongak, Korean seesaw, and swinging, with registration open from May 7 to May 24 at local welfare centers or online. Food enthusiasts can visit the Food Yard to enjoy traditional Dano foods such as surichwi tteok (rice cake) and cherry punch, along with other dishes like gukbap, pajeon, and fish cake.

The Event Zone offers interactive activities such as a Dano photo zone and social media events with prizes for on-the-day participation and post-event reviews. The festival promises a rich tapestry of cultural experiences, performances, and culinary delights for everyone to enjoy.
