Pump Gas Affordably at Self-Service Gas Stations

Today, we'll introduce how to pump gas at self-service gas stations. It might seem complicated because everything is written in Korean, but it's not that different from an American gas station. At self-service gas stations in Korea, they have disposable plastic gloves to prevent getting stained or the smell of gas on your hands.

Most Korean gas stations are also equipped with anti-static pads to prevent the fire sparkling from static electricity. Before you pump gas, you need to touch the pad to get rid of static.

To pump gas, pick the type of fuel first. In Korean, 휘발유 means gasoline, and 경유 means diesel. If you can’t read Korean, remember that gasoline is 3 syllables and diesel is 2). Next, you will choose the payment method. Options consist of credit card and cash. 신용카드 means credit card, and 현금 refers to cash.

For credit card use is more common yet a bit more complex than cash, we will walk you through the steps of paying with a credit card. After you choose your payment option, select the amount of fuel/price. When selecting the amount, note that the options will mostly likely be a number followed by the word 만원. Keep in mind that 만원 means ten thousand won, so the number in front indicates how many ten thousand wons. For example, if the option says 2만원, that means 20,000won. In addition, the last payment option is 가득 or 가득주유, which means full. If you select full, it will first charge you 100,000won~150,000won (depending on the gas station), but don’t be alarmed. It first charges you the maximum amount, but it will cancel the transaction and charge you the actual amount once you are done fueling up. Please note that if you're paying 50,000 won or more, you need to enter the number of months for the installment plan. Next, choose whether you want to print the receipt (may ask you after you are done pumping gas), then it will ask you to insert your credit card or cash. If you are paying with your credit card, do not remove it from the slot while the payment is processing.

Once approved, find the color of the appropriate fuel and start pumping. Make sure to secure the handle with a latch to fuel it hands-free. If you selected exact amount, it will tell you to return the nozzle, close your fuel cap, and remove the card once you are done fueling (if you chose to print the receipt, you're finished once the receipt is printed out). If you selected full, it will ask you whether you would like to round up the amount of liters (gas) or amount (1,000won standard) once your tank is “full.” After selecting your desired option, finish fueling. Once you are done pumping the rounded up amount of liters or won, you will be asked to put the nozzle back, close your fuel cap, and remove the card.

In Korea, you can find both self-service and fuel-service gas stations. People are increasingly choosing self-service stations for their affordable prices!
