Korean Street Food to Try This Winter [PIEF Foreign Reporter]

The weather is cooling down and the common treats found at the coldest part of the year are starting to show up at markets and cafes around Pyeongtaek. Here are four tasty foods you HAVE to try the next time you are looking for an authentic Korean sweet treat.

First is 붕어빵 (bung-eo-bbang). This warm snack is a pastry in the shape of a fish that is usually filled with red beans. You can also try one filled with custard cream, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, pizza and ice cream. You can find them at a variety of cafes. If you happen to see a cart selling bung-eo-bbang, count yourself lucky as they are becoming a rare sight!

Then there is 오뎅 which is a fish cake skewer. I love these! You can often get them at a restaurant with a bowl of ramen or udon noodles. But it is a hugely popular street food. Though these can be found anytime of the year, their warmth can bring comfort in the cold. Remember that they will come in two flavors: spicy or mild.

My favorite of the winter foods has to be , Hotteok. This is a fried bread filled with honey and seeds. It is warm and so sweet! It is often called a Korean pancake. Not only does it taste good but it is fun to watch the dough stretched, stuffed, and fried in quick motions while made at food carts in outdoor market places.

Finally, there is a treat that I will be new to me this winter, 계란빵 (Gyeran ppang.) Served in small tins it is a castella bread topped with an egg. If you are unable to find a cart selling these treats you can easily make it at home using hotcake dough. Fill a paper cup with the dough, crack an egg over top of it and stick it in an air fryer.
